Keenly aware of the dwindling numbers of bees throughout the world and their importance in pollinating many of our food sources such as fruit, vegetables and nuts, Yuggera man Jahmayne Coolwell and Caleb Cardno decided to create a beekeeping business called Territory Bees.
Territory Bees provides commercial pollination services to farmers, along with honey, equipment, hives and beekeeping training across the Northern Territory.
Jahmayne and Caleb have a vision to grow their commercial operation to a size where they can train, mentor and equip Indigenous people living in remote communities to have their own apiaries, with the intent to provide the opportunity for them to plug into the commercial pollination contracts that Territory Bees has so that they have a source of education, opportunity and income.
Establishment of new beehives to conduct commercial pollination services on a watermelon farm in the Douglas-Daly Region, Northern Territory.
The nucleus bee colonies include new hive box assemblies, frames of brood and eggs, resources (honey and pollen), a new queen and approximately 10,000 bees.
The bees will be fed on sugar syrup and a bee superfood called Ultrabee to assist in their establishment and growth into a thriving and strong colony ready for the 2023 pollination season.
The 2023 pollination season will generate approximately $600 of income per hive.
